Introductions & What do we know about the standards?

1) Print a copy of the Iowa Teaching Standards that are posted on the class website.

2) Get a Binder for your documentation of IA Teaching Standards

3) Develop a format for a parent communication log and begin recording those contacts. Keep track of whether that contact is teacher initiated or whether it is parent initiated, the date, and subject of the contact.

What Constitutes Evidence?

1)  Pick up a divider set with 8 dividers and label each with a Standard. (due Sept. 11)

2) Print the worksheet entitled “Evidence for Standards” and be able to describe what constitutes convincing evidence. Print Evidence for Standards - partially filled table to get a copy of the class notes from the groups shared at the Sept. 4 class.

3) Send us the criteria used at your school for teacher evaluation according to the IA Teaching Standards. (Due Sept. 11)

Levels of Evidence – Looking at Standard 1

1) Administer the Lawson test to one section of your students. Score and tabulate the results. (due Sept. 25)

2) Select another assessment piece (a selection of student work, ITBS scores, a report card) and bring the results of that piece to class on Sept. 18

3) Bring a class syllabus or course expectations for the classes you teach to the ICN class.

Developing an Atmosphere of Mutual Respect (Standard 6) – Connections to the other standards

1) Collect 3 artifacts that show you know your students beyond the classroom. Jot down some notes concerning how you have changed your instructions based upon the knowledge you have about individual students. Bring these notes and the artifacts to class on Oct. 2

Using Student Data to Make Decisions (Standard 1)

1) Select two to three assessments you use in your science instruction to evaluate students' understanding of important science concepts. Describe each assessment. Provide artifacts of each of these assessments. (These artifacts may include: copies of written assessments, instructions to students, note taking guides for students doing peer evaluation, or anecdotal notes taken during an informal conference with a student.)

Bring a draft of the paper to the Oct. 2 class. e-mail your final draft to Countryman Oct. 16.

1.) Evaluate your own reflective essay using the rubric. Bring your completed rubric to class on Oct. 9, along with a copy of your reflective essay.

3.) Print one extra (clean) copy of the rubric & bring it along to class on Oct. 9

  • Write a reflective essay weaving 3 artifacts together to paint a picture about how your knowledge of students impacts the decisions you make in the classroom. E-mail your completed essay to Stone by Oct. 30. (Reflective Essay 2 Assignment)

  • Videotape a class period to use as evidence for Standard 4.
  • Be sure to select a “lesson” that provides a rich context from which to reflect upon your teaching.
  • Evaluate this videotape by writing a reflective essay about how it provides evidence of meeting standard 4.(The rubric for this essay will be available on-line) E-mail your essay to Stone by Nov. 20.) (Reflective Essay Assignment 3)

  • Explain what you would provide as evidence for Standard 5d or formulate a way to meet this standard. Bring ideas to the Nov. 20 & Dec. 4 classes
